Hello lovely you,
Let’s lighten up our lives. Get ready to laugh!
Laughing is great medicine.
Don’t miss out on our fun competition below. There are prizes!
Are you a Silly Sod?
I’ve lived in America for 25 years, and I still have moments when my New Zealand/Aussie or British slang sneaks out. Sometimes it happens at the most inappropriate moment. Opps! I then have to explain what I said, and that can be a PC nightmare. When you look up “silly sod” in the Oxford dictionary, it means a stupid person.
Most Americans would think I was awfully rude and insulting to be calling someone a stupid person in the first place, let alone making it out to be a joke. This is not the case.
Silly sod is a gentle form of chastisement…an affectionate way of saying, stupid person. It is like saying silly sausage or silly duffer to your child when they lightly scrape their knee or do something silly.
I know my British and Downunder mates reading this can relate! We get into big trouble (disliked) because our strange slang is taken literally!
I can hear my mother now, “mind your P’s and Q’s darling!” To mind (also watch) one’s P’s and Q’s means to be careful or particular in one’s words or behavior; to mind one’s manners. There’s a myriad of theories on what the letters P & Q mean. No one seems to know!! How silly is that!
Giving yourself permission to be a “silly sod” will nourish your creativity and help you chill out and enjoy life. We all need that in our stressful lives. Silliness is uplifting and changes your state.
Childhood Silliness
As a child, we laugh at the smallest absurdities. As we grow older, this innate ability to see the value of being silly seems to dwindle. It’s called LIFE – kids – finances – relationships – family – health – work. It all appears to take precedence over play, and we have less time to be imaginative and silly.
When I remember my childhood, I recall the funny times. In the blink of an eye, my dad could take me from sobbing my heart out thinking my life was over to lying on the floor holding my stomach because it hurt so much from laughing. My dad had a knack of changing my state.
Too often we reject the wonderful silliness that is an inherent aspect of all of us. Why do we believe that silliness is only for younger people not mature grown ups?
About Darling Dave
For those of you who are fortunate enough to know my partner, my love, Dave, you will certainly understand when I say that my life is full of silliness. Dave and I love to hike on the weekends. Getting out of the city and into nature is something we often do to de-stress our lives. One day, on a hike in New Hampshire, I came around the corner, and this is what I saw.
When we are silly our imaginations are given free reign. We delight in ridiculousness not only because laughter is intrinsically pleasurable, but also because it serves as a reminder that life itself is meant to be light-hearted and fun.
So much of life is inescapably serious. Being a “silly sod” needs to be a priority.
Through the magic of imagination, you can be or become anything your heart desires – a man of silly walks like Dave, a movie star, a famous singer or professional athlete.
Perhaps you love Robin Williams (I miss him) and dress up as Mrs. Doubtfire when cooking in the kitchen. (Don’t set yourself on fire for goodness sake that would not be funny!) Or boogie down like a rock-star singing in front of your bedroom mirror, or re-enact your favorite NFL touchdown.
Ensuring laughter will help you see that lighthearted fun and adulthood are not at all incompatible.
Let laughter be your medicine.
I’m here for you.
