March Forth!
Did you know that today March 4th is Hug a G.I. Day? It’s a day that was started as a way to show our appreciation to all the men and women who serve in the U.S. Armed Forces. No one really knows the origin of the holiday or who started it, but most people think the date, March 4th, was chosen because March Forth! is a military order.
I propose that we also think of this holiday as the day we make a commitment to better ourselves. After all, march forth is what we all have to do in our own lives, isn’t it? Sometimes the battles are scary and downright bloody, but at the end of the day we can sit there and wait for the enemy (dis-ease, depression, self-loathing, addiction) to kill us, or we can march forth and fight the good fight and transform our lives into something meaningful that is cause for celebration.
This military theme also got me to thinking about how important it is that we all stand at attention and pay attention to the choices we are making, because those daily, hourly, minute-by-minute choices are what shape our reality. Have you really been paying attention to your life or are you on autopilot, simply reacting to things and playing the victim instead of being the sole creator of your life’s events?
And on a personal note, March 4th also has meaning for me because it is my birthday! And let me tell you, my birthdays have far greater meaning to me now than when I was in my 20s. Back then I took my life for granted. Sadly, back then, birthdays were simply an excuse to party and indulge all of my vices. Discovering now how precious my life really is, I feel very differently about my birthday and what the day really means to me. Nowadays I use my birthday as a time to reflect on my life journey and show gratitude for all of my blessings and for those who are traveling alongside me.
I am so very grateful to have you along on my journey and deeply hope that sharing my experiences will have a positive impact on your life and your health.
With love & gratitude,
Prue
